Simple Questions To Ask Your Family Lawyer

Written by Leanne Abela
8 March 2024

Family law is complex, and can be made even more complex if there are emotional, psychological or other issues such as mental health, substance abuse and/or domestic violence.

In the complex maze some answers to some basic questions may give you some clarity to be sure that there are no nasty surprises.

Some questions to ask your family lawyer may include:

  1. Do you specialise in family law matters?
  2. How long have you been doing family law matters?
  3. Do you know the lawyer for the other party? If so, what is your relationship with them? Can you work with them, or are there historical issues I need to be aware of?
  4. Do you deal with all aspects of relationship breakdown?
  5. What is your hourly rate? What is the hourly rate of others that may be involved in the handling of my matter?
  6. What do you estimate it will cost me to finalise my matter?
  7. What impediments do you see to my matter being finalized quickly and inexpensively?
  8. Do you have a team of lawyers and other support personnel who look after my matter and with whom I can have contact when you are otherwise unavailable such as on holidays?
